Germany won the bronze medal for women’s football at the 2024 Olympics after narrowly beating Spain 1-0 in the third-place match in Lyon on Friday night IST.
Germany’s winning goal was scored by Giulia Gwinn in the second half. This is the third bronze medal won by the German women’s soccer team at the Olympics, as reported by the official website of the 2024 Olympics.
The first threat was created by Germany in the 19th minute, but Klara Buehl’s opportunity was blocked by Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll.
Spain responded two minutes later through Teresa Abelleira’s shot, but they were unlucky as the ball hit the post.
Germany had a golden opportunity in the 42nd minute after Gwinn successfully met Felicitas Rauch’s cross, but Coll was still able to secure the ball.
Two minutes later, it was Spain’s turn to almost open the scoring. 2023 Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati’s shot hit the German crossbar.

The rebound was met by Jennifer Hermoso, but the 34-year-old forward’s finish was thwarted by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. The score remained 0-0 at the break.
In the second half, Germany broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. The Spanish goalkeeper fouled Gwinn in the penalty box, causing the referee to point to the spot.
Gwinn himself stepped up as the executioner and managed to beat Coll to change the score to 1-0.
Germany almost increased their lead in the 71st minute. Lea Schuller was free and unmarked in front of the goal and only had to face Coll, but his shot was still saved by the Spanish goalkeeper’s feet.
No additional goals were scored until the match ended. Germany won 1-0 and won the bronze medal.
