Current regulations often see officials ignore grappling and holding before a corner or free-kick is actually taken, a loophole that many high-ranking officials believe has now “spiraled out of control.”
The catalyst for this renewed scrutiny was the controversial disallowed goal in West Ham’s 0-1 loss to Arsenal, where multiple players were seen wrestling for position. While the issue was raised during the annual meeting in March, it was deemed too late for a deep dive at that time.
“We will look at this during the next season as it has become a very serious problem,” an IFAB source told The Times.
ESPN has also confirmed that formal discussions are expected to begin this autumn, potentially leading to stricter guidelines that would penalize players for holding opponents before the ball is even in play.
