Europa League: Juve Triumphs, Benfica Leads, Sunderland Faces Deepening Crisis

Europa League Matches Highlight Strong Performances and Ongoing Struggles

The evening saw the conclusion of matchday four in the Europa League, with kickoffs starting at 9pm on Thursday.

Among the notable results, Olympique de Marseille secured a 1-0 victory away at Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Benfica continued their perfect run, Juventus maintained their strong European form, and Sunderland’s troubles deepened.

Juventus, facing challenges in Serie A, found some relief in the Europa League. The Old Lady achieved a 2-1 away win against AZ Alkmaar, bringing their points total to ten out of a possible twelve. This result lifts the Turin club to fourth place in the standings.

Benfica remains a force to be reckoned with, defeating Lech Poznań 3-1 and marking their fourth consecutive win, which keeps their flawless record intact. With twelve points, they sit atop the league phase standings, followed closely by Bournemouth and Ferencváros, both of whom also boast four victories but trail due to goal difference.

In stark contrast, Sunderland faced another challenging evening. Currently at the bottom of the Premier League, the Black Cats continued to struggle in Europe, falling 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb and deepening their ongoing crisis.

Celtic, however, breathed new life into their European campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Beşiktaş, a triumph that may provide a boost after a rocky start.

Elsewhere, Union Saint-Gilloise demonstrated strong form, clinching a 2-1 victory at Celta Vigo.
