Headline: Kevin Viveros Faces Possible Suspension, Impacting Brasileirão Scoring Race
Athletico striker Kevin Viveros, the leading scorer in the Brasileirão, may be sidelined during the crucial concluding matches of the season. During a match against Vasco on Wednesday, Viveros placed his foot on player Cuiabano, leading to disciplinary action.
On Thursday, the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) charged Viveros under Article 254-A, which addresses physical assault in match play. Prosecutors have recommended a suspension of at least six matches, a penalty that could see Viveros out of competition for a significant period.
Consequently, Viveros will miss Athletico’s upcoming matchup against Flamengo, scheduled for Wednesday, the 18th, at 8:30 p.m. at the Maracanã stadium. While a hearing date has yet to be determined, an additional three-match suspension would prevent him from returning this season.
In the wake of this situation, Flamengo’s Pedro may have a clearer path in the top scorer race. Currently, Viveros leads with 21 goals, while Pedro trails closely with 20. Flamengo’s upcoming matches include encounters against Athletico (home), Palmeiras (away), Coritiba (away), and Chapecoense (home).
Pedro is merely one yellow card away from a suspension himself. Should he avoid a booking and remain healthy, he will have four games to try to surpass Viveros in the scoring charts.
