Currently, Germany sits third in Group A2 with five points, trailing both the Netherlands and Greece by three points. Klopp has yet to achieve a victory in his first two matches as permanent head coach, marking a notable moment in history alongside Sepp Herberger and Helmut Schon. However, there has been some improvement since that rough start.
Germany’s Squad Reflects Klopp’s Ongoing Experimentation
Klopp’s initial camp got off to a rocky start with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, followed by a 1-0 loss to Greece in Augsburg, which was significant as it marked Greece’s first-ever win over Germany. In response, Klopp made sweeping changes for the upcoming match against Serbia in Munich, introducing a completely new starting XI and giving debuts to three players. This tactic paid off, with Germany securing a 2-0 victory.
Germany then played to a frustrating 0-0 draw in Thessaloniki, characterized by missed opportunities, as they registered 21 shots yet failed to find the net. Despite this, Klopp expressed that he was “super happy” with the initial progress. This illustrates the current challenges facing Germany, as Klopp seeks to establish structure, tempo, and dependability within the team.

Florian Wirtz Secures Another Opportunity
Wirtz plays a crucial role in Klopp’s plans. After missing the first two matches of Klopp’s tenure due to a divided squad, Wirtz made a notable impact in the Serbia match, scoring Germany’s second goal in the 61st minute and contributing to Tom Bischof’s opening goal by hitting the post.

Klopp has made efforts to ease the pressure surrounding him. Following his initial squad announcement, he emphasized that Germany should not rely solely on moments of brilliance from Wirtz but should instead foster an environment where he can perform comfortably. This approach is indeed practical. Wirtz has the potential to turn games around, but placing the weight of expectation solely on him is counterproductive.

Liverpool Performance Increases Pressure Ahead of Nations League Matches
Wirtz’s club performance adds an interesting dimension to his call-up. He transferred to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025 for £100 million, potentially rising to £116.5 million with add-ons. So far, his output has been modest, with one goal in 13 appearances across all competitions, no goals in the Premier League, and two assists in league play.
Last weekend, he struck the crossbar with a free-kick during Liverpool’s 1-0 home loss to Arsenal, before being substituted in the 81st minute. This defeat marked only Liverpool’s second under Andoni Iraola, leaving the team nine points adrift of the league leaders. The context is critical, as pressure mounts with high transfer fees, and Wirtz is acutely aware of this pressure.
Klopp’s broader squad features recalled striker Niclas Fuellkrug, who is now 33 and leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with nine goals, along with a first senior call-up for 17-year-old Wael Mohya from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The squad includes seven players from Bayern Munich, while Nick Woltemade, Karim Adeyemi, Nadiem Amiri, and David Raum will miss out. The squad will convene in Herzogenaurach on Monday, offering Wirtz a significant opportunity to reset his performance.
