Aquilani Faces Sassuolo Dismissal Concerns: ‘I Must Be Judged on Results’

Reports indicate that Sassuolo is contemplating the dismissal of head coach Alberto Aquilani following five consecutive defeats. “I have to be judged on results and I have to question myself,” the coach stated.

Aquilani, who took over during the summer to replace Fabio Grosso, had previously been in talks with Torino before finalizing his contract with the Neroverdi.

As of now, Aquilani holds a mixed record this season, with positive moments like a 3-2 win against Juventus, but overall, his team struggles with four wins, two draws, and seven losses across Serie A and Coppa Italia.

The team’s recent performance included a 3-0 defeat to Roma, marking their fifth consecutive loss, leaving them with a sole point in the last seven matches, the only draw being a 1-1 against Milan.

Italian sports outlets, including Sky Sport Italia and Sportitalia, report that Sassuolo is seriously evaluating a change in management during the international break, with Roberto D’Aversa emerging as a potential successor.

Aquilani acknowledges team’s struggles

Reflecting on the team’s poor performance against Roma, Aquilani remarked, “It was as if a light went off.” He expressed disappointment with his team’s lack of courage when in possession, which made it challenging to compete. “When we went 1-0 down, the game just stopped. I expect more from my players, but I must take accountability.”

This season marks Aquilani’s debut in Serie A after notable success in Serie B with Pisa and Catanzaro.

He commented on the team’s mentality, recognizing the difficulty in motivating players after five consecutive losses. “We talk about mental fragility, but it’s hard to lift the players after five defeats in a row. This is football; we need to face the reality.”

In his final remarks, Aquilani was asked whether he believes Sassuolo’s directors still support him. “I haven’t spoken to them yet. I always felt their faith, but obviously I have to be judged on results, and I need to reevaluate many aspects.”
