Headline: Carrick Confirms Fernandes’ Commitment Following Tumultuous Period
In a recent statement, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick expressed his confidence in captain Bruno Fernandes, citing his attitude as “as good as ever.” This assurance follows a series of tensions between the two after Fernandes publicly criticized Carrick’s tactics during a 4-1 defeat to Como. As a result, Carrick opted to drop Fernandes from the lineup in a subsequent 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.
However, after discussions last week, Fernandes returned to the squad for the match against Chelsea on Saturday. He played a crucial role in United’s comeback victory over Roma, scoring their first goal from a twice-taken penalty and assisting Matheus Cunha’s equalizer.
Carrick commented on Fernandes’ recent performance, saying, “I think by his actions, the way he’s played and how he dealt with even retaking the penalty and frame of mind he was in for that, I think that tells everything. Yeah, Bruno’s as good as ever.”
Despite their prior disagreements, Carrick did not disclose whether Fernandes had apologized, stating, “What’s actually said in that discussion, you’ll be pleased to know I’ll keep that to myself.” He added that he believes Fernandes’ commitment to the team and club remains unquestionable.
Additionally, Carrick urged Matheus Cunha to maintain his strong performance after scoring two goals and winning a penalty against Roma, emphasizing that he should aim to reproduce that level consistently. “He has to repeat that performance,” Carrick remarked. “He was fantastic and that’s close to his best, and that’s the level where we want to see.”
As Manchester United continues to struggle, having secured only one win in their last ten games across all competitions, Carrick reassured that he has not sought any reassurances regarding his managerial position. He confirmed, “No, no,” when asked if he had been told he would remain in charge next week, stating that his plans would continue “as absolute normal.”
