Manchester United Faces Midfield Challenge After Carlos Baleba’s Injury
Manchester United’s season has encountered a significant hurdle. Carlos Baleba, the midfielder acquired for £70 million this summer to enhance the strength and speed of Michael Carrick’s midfield, is now facing an extensive period on the sidelines that could extend deep into winter.

Initial assessments are concerning. Baleba injured his hamstring during United’s comeback victory against Roma on Tuesday, pulling up early in the second half and leaving the field in evident pain. What initially appeared to be a short-term issue has escalated into a potential absence that might affect critical upcoming matches, including the clash at Anfield on November 22 and a Champions League fixture against Sporting CP on November 25.
Injury Disrupts Midfield Dynamics
This setback is particularly damaging for Carrick, as it extends beyond merely losing a player. Baleba has only started five matches since joining from Brighton, partly due to an ankle injury that delayed his season’s start. Nevertheless, he has provided glimpses of the athleticism that United sought in his signing—a midfielder adept at quick covers, recovering possession, and enhancing transitions in the midfield.
Now, however, that integration process must be paused once more. Carrick has indicated that the prognosis remains uncertain, but the general outlook suggests a significant recovery period. “We don’t know, but it will be a number of weeks,” Carrick stated. “It won’t be after the international break that Baleba returns. It’ll be a little longer than that.”

Carrick Evaluates Team Strategy
The absence of Baleba forces United to navigate a packed schedule without a midfielder brought in to elevate their game. December alone features seven fixtures, including a challenging away game at Arsenal on December 20, and Baleba’s return by that date remains uncertain.
Carrick must also determine how swiftly he can reintegrate Patrick Dorgu. The defender has returned to partial training following his own hamstring issues, but the club’s medical team advises caution. Dorgu’s participation in the upcoming match against Aston Villa is still undecided, with staff cautious not to exacerbate previous muscle injuries.
Currently, United faces a stark reality in football. Well-laid plans can change at a moment’s notice, and the implications of missing players often extend beyond just the games lost, affecting overall team momentum.
