Headline: Germany Squad Omits Adeyemi for Upcoming Internationals Amid Defensive Concerns
Germany’s decision to exclude Karim Adeyemi from the squad for the upcoming international matches against Serbia and the Netherlands has generated discussion among football analysts. Former German goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller shared his insights on Sky’s “Triple – Der Hagedorn-Fußballtalk,” offering a possible explanation for the omission.
Weidenfeller highlighted that a lack of defensive contribution could be the primary reason for Adeyemi’s absence. He noted that although the striker had shown promise in attack, particularly during the match against the Netherlands, his defensive shortcomings became apparent in the game against Greece, where he struggled to track back effectively.
According to Weidenfeller, while national team coach Jürgen Klopp allows players considerable freedom to advance, the expectation to fulfill defensive responsibilities remains critical. Adeyemi’s hesitation in performing these duties may have led to his exclusion, serving as a potential message from the coach.
TV pundit Dietmar Hamann also expressed his surprise at the decision, pointing out that players with Adeyemi’s impressive speed are rare within the squad. Additionally, the striker’s inconsistent performances at his club may have contributed to his dropping down the selection hierarchy, allowing other attacking talents to ascend.
No place in Germany’s squad: Weidenfeller suspects defensive weaknesses are behind Adeyemi’s omission. Karim Adeyemi’s exclusion from the squad for the upcoming internationals against Serbia and the Netherlands has sparked debate.
According to Weidenfeller, the main reason is a lack of defensive work. Although Adeyemi had performed reasonably well in attack—notably against the Netherlands, even though he missed a potential winner—Weidenfeller spotted weaknesses in his tracking back during the match against Greece.
Under Klopp, players enjoy plenty of freedom going forward, but tracking back is mandatory. Since Adeyemi had sometimes been too hesitant in that regard, Weidenfeller suggested his omission could be a deliberate warning from the national team coach.
TV pundit Dietmar Hamann also expressed surprise at the decision, stressing that players with Adeyemi’s tremendous pace are few and far between in the squad. Beyond the tactical details, Adeyemi’s current club situation may also have played a part: following inconsistent performances for his club, other attacking players moved ahead of him in the pecking order this time.
