Leeds United Ex-Defender Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles: A Reflection on Choices

Rasmus Kristensen has recently opened up about the depression and pressure he faced during his time at Leeds United, highlighting that his permanent departure was beneficial for both himself and the club.

Leeds United is now enjoying a more stable Premier League season under manager Daniel Farke, following summer recruitment that has bolstered crucial positions. Currently, the team holds the 12th spot in the league after nine matches, having secured 11 points through two wins, five draws, and two losses, with a goal tally of nine while conceding eight.

In the right-back position, Farke has reliable options in players like Jayden Bogle and James Justin. Bogle has contributed two goals in seven matches this season, and Justin has added one goal in his appearances. Both players offer the team significant attacking support while also providing solid defensive play, allowing Leeds to maintain their physical style without needing immediate investment in that area. Their performances reflect the marked changes within the club since Kristensen’s struggle to secure his place at Elland Road.

This stands in stark contrast to Leeds’ previous relegation campaign, when several high-profile signings found it challenging to adjust. One former defender has since revealed the personal toll that period took on him.

Kristensen opens up about Leeds United struggles

According to Sport Witness, Kristensen revealed his mental health challenges in an interview with Ajax Life, admitting that his season at Leeds left him grappling with stress and depression.

The Danish international joined from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022 for around £11 million, reuniting with former coach Jesse Marsch. He made 30 appearances during Leeds’ relegation season, but the mounting pressure proved overwhelming.

“By the end of that season, I was completely broken,” Kristensen stated. He acknowledged that he had relied heavily on football for his sense of self, often obsessing over training and matches, even in his downtime.

His eventual loan to Roma provided little respite, as the rigors of Italian football introduced new pressures. A move to Frankfurt, however, offered a healthier atmosphere, particularly after the birth of his son helped him create a better balance between his professional and personal life.

In the summer of 2026, the 29-year-old made a permanent return to his boyhood club, Midtjylland, for about £5 million, bringing his family closer to home.

Did Leeds United make the right decision selling Kristensen?

Leeds made a prudent decision in allowing Kristensen to leave permanently. Recovering a meaningful fee for a defender who struggled during their relegation campaign was sound financial strategy, and his departure cleared the way for more reliable options in the Premier League.

Farke’s current tactics require full-backs to exhibit positional discipline, technical skill, and intelligent movement. Bogle and Justin consistently offer these qualities, providing Leeds with greater defensive balance.

Moreover, this decision also proved beneficial for Kristensen. His candid revelations about depression illustrate the significant impact his time at Elland Road had on him, and forcing a return would not have served either the player or the club well.

Leeds United needed a dependable right-back, while Kristensen sought an environment where football did not dominate every aspect of his life.
